Church of Sharon, with Pastor Matt Olson officiating. Visitation will be
from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, April 25, 2024 from First Baptist Church of

Born on April 5, 1937 in Tiptonville, Tenn., he pastored churches for
more than 50 years in Alabama, Arizona, Florida and Mississippi. He
retired from the Wayne County Baptist Association as Director of
Missions in 2007.
He also proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War.
He was a member of FBC Sharon, where he faithfully served as the
Associate Pastor of Senior Adults.
Pawpaw, as he was affectionately known by most, enjoyed traveling with
his family as the "wagon master," leading mission trips and being an
amateur HAM radio operator. If you were ever looking for him, you could
find him clowning around with his magic shows, tinkering under the hood
of a car or cooking up delicious meals in the kitchen. His favorite past
time was rocking the grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He died on Saturday, April 20, 2024 at his residence in Laurel.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Norma L. Mackey; his five
children and their respective spouses, Tammy and Larry Howard, Lynda and
John Duvall, Deanna and Hal Gardner, Lynn "Butch" Mackey, Jr., and
Christopher and Rebecca Mackey; 16 grandchildren, 12
great-grandchildren, two sisters, a brother and several nieces and
nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents as well as a brother and a
sister.
Pallbearers will be Butch Mackey, Chris Mackey, Larry Howard, John
Duvall, Hal Gardner and Jonathan Strickler. Honorary pallbearers will
include FBC Sharon Deacons along with pastors, ministers and deacons
with whom he had the privilege to serve through the years.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to FBC Sharon Building Fund
and Gideon's International.
Memory Chapel of Laurel is in charge of arrangements.
