Emergency crews were out early Thursday morning restoring power, replacing damaged power poles, clearing roads and assessing damage from Wednesday night's storm system.
Wayne County Emergency Management Director Angela Atchison said no one was injured in the storms, although emergency personnel were called out to scenes where injuries were first reported.
"We did receive calls about people being injured, but thank God when we arrived at the scene there were no major injuries," she said.
The storm system did do some heavy damage, especially at Maynor Creek Water Park and Wayne Academy. At the park, one cabin had tin torn from its roof while another was heavily damaged when a tree fell on it. According to park officials, there were nine people staying in cabin Wednesday night but no one was injured.
Wayne Academy was closed on Thursday as crews began clearing trees and removing debris. Fences were knocked down, including the fence at Cheston Jones Memorial Field. Reports were that some of the wood from the outfield fence ended up embedded in the turf on the pitcher's mound and around home plate.
Crews will continue to access damage and report it to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency. For an full updated story, be sure and pick up a copy of the April 7 edition of The Wayne County News.
