Born on Feb. 15, 1936 to Albert G. Powe, Sr., and Florence McCarty Powe, she attended elementary school in Chicora and later graduated high school in Clara, just a few miles from her home.
Although her parents were Church of God and Methodist, she began to attend the Baptist church in Chicora. She and her best friend, Elizabeth Pope, both accepted Christ there and were baptized in the Chickasawhay River near the church. Later, Pope married the very pastor who baptized them and he and she soon became Southern Baptist missionaries.
Doris graduated from William Carey University in 1958. She then attended the University of Southern Mississippi for graduate studies and soon began her teaching career. She taught one year at Prichard Junior High School and one year at Stonewall High School before moving to McComb, where she retired from McComb High School after teaching there for nearly 26 years.
Later in life, she discovered she had a talent for painting. Her brush strokes that she left behind on her canvases are as beautiful as is the legacy of her gentleness, her kindness and her strong Christian faith and values. She was a longtime member of South McComb Baptist Church and for the last 20 years had been a member of Central Baptist Church.
She died on Sunday, Feb. 20, 2022 at her residence.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Dr. David Alan Millican, Sr.; three children and their respective spouses, David Alan Millican, Jr., of Brandon, Alisa Kaye and James Wamsley of Rock Springs, Wyo., and Allison Anne and Greg Cullom of Diamondhead; three grandchildren, Sarah Anne Lewman of Seattle, Wash., Thomas Cody Lewman of Billings, Mont., and Grant Alexander Cullom of Melbourne, Australia; a sister-in-law, Gloria Powe of Hattiesburg; a niece and her spouse, Donna and Wayne Green of Hattiesburg; a nephew and his spouse, Scott and Debbie Powe of Bay St. Louis; three bonus great-grandchildren, Gianna Belin Bozner, Sophia Rose Bozner and Joseph Bozner, all of Rock Springs.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Albert G. Powe, Jr.
Pallbearers Don Carlisle, Kevin Johnston, Daniel Hart, Kirk Haskins, Mervin Boyd, Randall Allen and Bob Kyzar. Honorary pallbearers will be the deacons of Central Baptist Church, the deacons of South McComb Baptist Church and the deacons and elders of First Christian Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Doris Millican's memory to the William Carey Memorial Scholarship Fund, 498 Tuscan Ave., Hattiesburg, MS 39401.
