A 19-year-old male is dead while another 19-year-old male is facing a
first degree murder charge after a Friday night shooting at 602 Gray Street.
According to Waynesboro Police Chief Holt Ross, officers were called to
the scene of a shooting on Gray Street around 7:30 p.m. Friday night.
There, they found Darius Olivas, 19, had suffered gunshot wounds that
led to his death.
Just minutes after midnight Friday, officers arrested Marcus Monte
Coleman, 19, and charged him with possession of marijuana, discharging a
firearm in the city limits and first degree murder.
Chief Ross said the preliminary investigation indicated that a
disagreement between the two men escalated and led to the shooting.
Further details were not released as it is an ongoing investigation.
Monday morning, Coleman made his initial appearance before Municipal
Court Judge Charles Chapman.
Coleman was informed that the penalties for a conviction on a first
degree murder charge could be a maximum of life in prison and a $10,000
fine. Coleman did request a preliminary hearing, which was scheduled for
April 11, and asked that the court appoint an attorney for him.
WPD Investigator Macy Torrey told Chapman that the suspect did not try
to flee when encountered by officers late Friday night, and that he has
been "very respectful the entire time."
When asked if he wanted to say anything, Coleman told Chapman no.
Chapman did get Coleman to admit that he dropped out of school in the
twelfth grade, with the suspect saying, "I didn't like school."
Chapman then set Coleman's bond at $1 million. He could get bonded out
of jail if he comes up with 10 percent --- or $100,000 --- plus bail
bondsmen fees.
