Voter turnout low for Tuesday primaries

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump easily carried
Wayne County in primary elections that drew every little attention from
local voters.
Only 11.18 percent of registered voters cast a ballot on Tuesday or by
absentee ballot. There was only one affidavit ballot left to be counted
on Wednesday morning.
The City 5 precinct had the lowest turnout with 4.91 percent while the
Matherville/Coyt box had the highest turnout with 16.76 percent of the
registered voters casting a ballot.
In all, a total of 2,992 voters cast a ballot in the Republican and
Democratic primaries that focused on federal races.
In the Democratic Primary, President Joe Biden easily as he ran
unopposed. He brought home 647 votes with five write-ins. All of the
candidates in the Democratic Primary ran unopposed.
On the Republican side, former President Donald Trump had little trouble
as all of his opponents had already dropped out of the race. He brought
in 2,225 votes compared to 65 for Nikki Haley, 26 for Ron DeSantis and
seven for Vivek Ramaswamy.
In the race for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate, incumbent
Roger Wicker brought in 1,646 votes while Dan Eubanks earned 359 and
Ghannon Burton took in 304.
In the GOP U.S. House District 4 primary, incumbent Mike Ezell earned
1,870 votes while Carl Boyanton took home 344 and Michael McGill earned
96.
The first box arrived at the Wayne County Courthouse at 7:25 with the
last box --- that being Buckatunna --- arriving at 8:27. Shortly after
that, the vote totals were completed.
Roughly 200 absentee ballots were cast while only one affidavit ballot
was marked county wide.
No Democrats voted in the Corinth precinct while only four Republicans
voted in the City 1 box during Tuesday's election.
