Funeral services for Mary Elizabeth Cochran, 74, of Buckatunna, will be

at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 20, 2022 from the Chapel of Freeman Funeral

Home, with Rev. Paul Harris officiating. Visitation will be from 12-2

p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 20, 2022 from the Parlor of Freeman Funeral Home.

Following the funeral service, interment will take place at Zion Rest

Cemetery in Buckatunna.

Born in Stratton on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 1947 to Alfonzo Dodd and Dorothy

Dodd, she had worked in Production at Scott Paper Company.

She died on Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2022 at HCA Florida Gulf Coast Hospital in

Panama City, Fla.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Jame and Jessice

Keenam, Jr., of Tampa, Fla. and Jody and Amber Keenam of Panama City

Beach; her brother, Danny Dodd of Mobile, Ala.; three sisters, Brenda

Farmer, Darlene Paul and Sulvia Strickland, all of Mobile; two

granddaughters, Casey Keenam and Courtney Keenam, both of Tampa; and two

great-grandchildren, Ryus Ball and Leona Ball.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyman Carlise Cochran; her

father, Alfonzo Dodd; her mother, Dorothy Dodd; her brother, William

Dodd; and her sister, Jean Douglas.

HILDA ELIZABETH MINTON NEWSOM

Funeral services for Hilda Elizabeth Minton Newsom (Mrs. Walter Decell

Newsom), 102, will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22, 2022 from

Waynesboro First United Methodist Church, with Dr. Steven Bruns

officiating. Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22, 2022

from Waynesboro First United Methodist Church.

Following the funeral service, interment will take place at Serenity

Gardens Cemetery.

Born in Gadsden, Ala., on Feb. 21, 1920, she was the daughter of

Clarence Shuford (Painter) and Juanita Victoria (Henson) Minton, both

natives of East Ellijay, Ga.

She grew up in Laurel during the Depression, graduating from George S.

Gardiner High School in 1937. She graduated from Jones County Junior

College in Ellisville. She served as President of Dunahoo Literary

Society and was the News Editor of The Radionian. Following graduation

in 1939, Hilda worked as Mail Circulation Manager at The Laurel

Leader-Call Newspaper. In September 1941, she became Assistant Manager

of the Office Supply Company.

On March 15, 1943, she became the first woman in Mississippi who

enlisted in the Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Services (WAVES),

a branch of the Navy created to free men for active duty. Following boot

camp, HIlda covered Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and western

Florida as a Recruiter and was commended by the Chief of Naval Personnel

for her work in Navy Nurse Procurement. She was given an Honorable

Discharge on Nov. 14, 1945 with the rating of Specialist Recruiter First

Class.

While stationed in New Orleans, Hilda became reacquainted with Navy

Lietuenent Walter Decell Newsom, a native of Wayne County and son of

Louis Rowan and Annie Coral (Gray) Newsom. They married on June 2, 1946

in Laurel. That fall, the newly established G. I. Bill of Rights allowed

her to enter the University of Chicago, where she graduated on March 19,

1948 with a degree in Biological Sciences and Decell graduates from the

Northern Illinois College of Optometry Accelerated Program.

The Newsomes returned to Mississippi, with Dr. Newsom beginning his

Optometric practice in December 1948 in Waynesboro. By 1950, Hilda was

the proprietor of the Sunny Flower Shop and then, later, of the Spot

Coffee Shop. She and Decell were co-owners of many area businesses, such

as the Triple Threat, the Humdinger, the Fiesta Restaurant and several

curb stores, as well as the Twin Cinema II and Serenity Gardens

Perpetual Care Cemetery.

Hilda and Decell were instrumental in bringing Malbis Bread Company and

Borden's Wayne Maid Dairy Products into Wayne County. Hilda taught

English at Waynesboro-Central High School and participated in Adult

Literacy Programs. She had several articles published in national

magazines, and she enjoyed reading, studying foreign languages,

swimming, painting, pottery making, traveling and playing (and winning)

a mean Scrabble game!

Since 1949, Hilda and Decell, and their five children, participated in

activities of her beloved Waynesboro First United Methodist Church. Her

rewarding activity was teaching the Pre-School Sunday School Class.

Decell died on Aug. 20, 2003 in Hattiesburg. After his death, Hilda

thrived in Azalea Trace, a retirement community in Pensacola, Fla. She

will be remembered as a faithful Christian, beloved wife and mother and

close friend.

She died on Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2022 in Pensacola.

She is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law, David L. "Larry"

and Martha Newsom of Waynesboro and Richard L. and Renee Newsom of

Laurel; two daughters and sons-in-law, Anita L. Newsom and Steven Nail

of Greenville and Karena L. Newsom and Raad Cawthon of Oaxaca, Mexico;

her sister, Oleta I. Minton Montgomery of San Antonio, Texas; her

grandchildren and their respective spouses, W. Lance and Sommer Newsom,

William G. Newsom, Linda D. and Tiebauer Forrest, Eric A. Tiebauer, Lisa

A. Tiebauer, Zachary L. Newsom, Jodie L. Newsom and Mason Walters, A.

Courtney Cox, Luaren E. Nail and Emile Swindol and T. Jacob and Tessa

Cawthorn; and her great-grandchildren, Bailey Newsom, Britton Newsom,

Ryleigh Newsom, Olivia Newsom, Austin Newsom, Amelia Cox, Charles

Abston, Victoria Warren, Britain Hart, Paron Forrest, Rachel Tiebauer,

Forress McRae, Jairus McRae, Tucker Cawthon, Esme Cawthon and Otto

Cawthon.

Pallbearers will be Lance Newsom, Zachary Newsom, Eric Tiebauer, Emile

Swindol, Mason Walters and Terry Clanton. Honorary pallbearers will be

Tom Becton, Jacob Cawthon, Bob Cooley, Doug Everitt, Ennis King, Alan

McAdams, Will Newsom, Ken Rhinehart, Gary Sigler, Bill Walker and Bobby

Watkins.

Staten of Omaha, Neb., and Renaldo and Brenda Hoplkins of Quitman; a

brother-in-law, Mary Francie and Rev. Dr. J. Louis Gilmore-Dunn, Jr., of

Jackson; 22 grandchildren; and two god brothers and their respective

spouses, Daniel and Christine Woodard of Rolling Fork and Jericho and

Romeshia Arrington of Waynesboro.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
