BROOKHAVEN — The War Eagles of Wayne County jumped out to a 17-0 halftime lead then held on to take a 26-12 victory over Brookhaven High Friday night.

The win moves WCHS to 5-2 on the year and 3-0 in District 3-5A action.

Wayne County got on the board first with 5:53 left in the first quarter when a punt snap by the Panther was bobbled in the end zone, causing the punter to touch his knee down in the end zone for a safety.

With 5:39 left in the first half, Jalen Jones caught a dart from Carter Hankins for a 6-yard score, and the Kyle Clark kick opened up a 9-0 advantage for the visiting team.

After a Kelvin Walley interception return deep into Brookhaven territory, the War Eagles capitalized with a 2-yard run by Aikerien Hopkins. The senior then ran in the conversion to make it a 17-0 ball game at the intermission.

Brookhaven pulled two within nine points at the 5:39 mark of the third quarter, using a 77-yard run and a controversial two-point conversion to turn the trick, making it 17-8.

On the ensuing kickoff, Isaiah Boyd raced 92 yards for a score to make it 23-8 with 5:11 remaining in the third.

The Panthers were far from done, though, using a 66-yard run to set up a 2-yard touchdown plunge with 35 seconds left in the period. The conversion pass was good, cutting the deficit down to 23-16.

In the fourth quarter, Clark booted a 35-yard field goal, then the defense iced the game for the War Eagles.
