Funeral services for Rev. William R. Mills, 92, of Clara, were conducted
on Friday, Dec. 15, 2023 from Clara First Church of God, with Dr. Steve
Smith, Rev. Warren Slay and Rev. Chris Cooper officiating.
Interment followed at White House Cemetery in Waynesboro.
Born in Waynesboro on Sunday, May 10, 1931 to the late Herman E. and
Myrtle Mills, Rev. Mills served in the United States Army and was a
Veteran of the Korean War. He retired from Clara First Church of God,
where he served as pastor for 50 years and was a long-time member.
He loved doing mission work, both nationally and internationally. He
made 28 trips to the Philippines, where he helped develop a school for
the deaf, and he made many trips to Mexico, where he helped build many
churches.
He was instrumental in the development of Pine Belt Mental Health in
Wayne County, where he served on the Board of Directors for many years.
He loved his family and was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
He died on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2023 at his residence, surrounded by his
loving family.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 70 years, Sister
Bernice Mills of Clara; two sons and daughters-in-law, Freddie and Carla
Mills and Marlon and Imogene Walley, all of Clara; two daughters and a
son-in-law, Sharry and Vince Muscat and Cecilia Mills, all of Clara; his
brother and sister-in-law, Stanley Herman and Charlotte Mills of
Lucedale; four grandchildren and their respective spouses, Chris and
Christina Muscat, Lakisha and Robert West, Brandi and Dustin Freeman and
Brianna and Kaleb Smith; 10 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and
nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman E. and Myrtle Mills; his
stepmother, Willie Mills; two brothers, Edgar Mills and Chris Mills; two
sisters, Bobbie Nell Dickerson and Ilene Fairley; and a granddaughter,
Jennifer Romjin.
