Jaguars roll to district championship

COLUMBIA — In one half of play, the District 3-4A Championship was securely in the hands of the Jaguars of Wayne Academy.
W.A. scored 41 answered points in the first 24 minutes of the contest, then rolled players in and out of the second half while the clock ran as the Jags took a 41-22 win over the Cougars of Columbia Academy.
The win moved the Jaguars to 6-3 overall and 2-0 in district play. It also secures a first-round bye in the playoffs and no worse than a No. 4 seed in postseason play.
Wayne closes out the regular season on the road next week against Winston Academy.
“We came out and took care of things in the first half,” Head Coach Todd Mangum said. “The guys up front (offensive linemen) did a great job in the first half and all of our guys ran hard.
“Now, we’re district champions but we’ve got a big game on the road next week against Winston. We’ve got to keep the momentum going heading into the playoffs.”
The Jaguars rushed for 354 yards on 37 carries in the first two quarters of play, racking up all 41 points they would score in the contest. The defense, meanwhile, held the Cougars to 3 rushing yards and minus-4 passing yards in the first half while also forcing two turnovers.
W.A. used a pooch kick to start the game, with Davion Woulard recovering it at the Columbia 38-yard line. Eight plays later — including a fourth-down run by Cross Kittrell for a first down — and Stone Ross scored on a 3-yard run. The Zander Pitts kick made it 7-0 with 8:42 left in the first quarter of play.
Two plays later, on a pitch play, Blaze Beasley swatted the ball in midair, allowing Kadin Johnston to fall on the loose ball. That set the Jaguars up at the Columbia 29. Nine plays later, the drive stalled and a long field goal fell short.
The defense held and forced a three-and-out, allowing W.A. to take over at its own 32-yard line. It took only eight plays to traverse the 68 yards, with Ross plunging in from a yard out. That made it 13-0 with 40 seconds remaining in the quarter.
Then came a fast and furious second quarter that was all Wayne Academy.
Another Columbia punt backed the Jaguars up to their own 9-yard line. It wasn’t a problem, though, as Cross Kittrell took the handoff and the offensive line opened up a hole similar to when Moses parted the Red Sea, allowing the senior to race 91 yards up the middle for the score. The Pitts kick opened up a 20-0 lead with 11:07 left in the half.
A bad snap on a punt during the ensuing series allowed the Jaguars to set up at the Columbia 14-yard line. Three plays later, Kadin Johnston bulled his way in from 5 yards out, and the Pitts kick made it 27-0 with 9:20 left before the intermission.
A fourth down incompletion on the ensuing series allowed W.A. to take over at its own 17-yard line. Thirteen plays later — including seven runs by Colin Trigg — and the Jaguars were in the end zone again, this time off a 2-yard run from Kittrell. The Pitts extra point made it 34-0 with 1:58 remaining.
Two plays later, Will Hodo recovered a fumble, giving W.A. possession at the Columbia 44. On first down, Johnston broke into the open and raced down the sideline for the score. The Pitts kick made it 41-0 with 1:07 left, and the running clock was put into play.
The Cougars forced a punt and turned it into a touchdown, then used a fumble to set up another score, making it 41-14 by the end of the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Cougars forced a punt to start the period, then marched 68 yards in eight plays, capping the drive off with a 1-yard run, cutting the deficit down to 41-20 with 4:00 left.
The Jaguars were able to run the clock out on the ensuing series to take the win and secure the district crown.
