Born on Jan. 15, 1938 in Clara, she graduated from Clara High School in 1955 and was the Homecoming Queen during her senior year. She attended the University of Southern Mississippi for two years.
In August 1957, she married John Edward West of Waynesboro at Big Creek Baptist Church. They honeymooned in Corpus Christi, Texas, before moving to Mississippi City as newlyweds.
Over the next five year, the couple moved their growing family from Huntsville, Ala., to Tarpon Springs, and Naples, Fla., then beck to Huntsville before settling in the Monrovia community. She earned her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Home Economics from Alabama A&M University, then taught at Sparkman High School for nearly 20 years before retiring.
In retirement, she enjoyed making frequent trips back to the farm she grew up on while also caring for her parents. She was a devoted mother, supporting her four boys in sports for many years.
As a grandmother, she cooked up meals of fresh vegetables from her garden and taught her grandchildren the joys of fishing and to appreciate a dirt road. John and Nell shared 61 years of marriage, and their example of love for each other stands large in the eyes of the many who love them.
She died at her home on Tuesday, June 4, 2019, surrounded by her family.
She is survived by her husband, John Edward West; a brother, Charles Singleterry of Hattiesburg; her sons and daughter-in-laws, William Rush and Jane West, Mark Edward and Julia West, Terry Dexter and Audrey West, all of Huntsville, Ala., and Randy Clarke and Ronda West of Auburn, Ala.; her grandchildren and their respective spouses, Rachael and Justin Mayo, Rush West, Kris and Meagan West, Jonathon West, Daniel West, Laura West, Macie and Hunter Morris, Anna Grayce and Drew Smith, Clara West and Conner and Maggie West; and her great-grandchildren, Brock Simons, Tripp Morris, Tynleigh West, Bryton Simons, Charlotte Morris, Porter Smith and Lawson West.
