A Silas, Ala., man was killed and another man airlifted from the scene after a Thursday afternoon wreck on Highway 84.
According to Wayne County VFD Fire Coordinator Rufus Landrum, the accident occurred around 2:30 p.m. Thursday on Highway 84 West roughly halfway between Waynesboro and Silas. Pronounced dead at the scene was Arnet West, 79, of Silas.
Landrum said West was driving a pickup truck loaded with chicken litter when it was struck from behind by an 18-wheeler. The force of the impact pushed the vehicle West was driving into the woods on the side of the road.
Both the pickup truck and the cab of the 18-wheeler were destroyed in the accident. The driver of the 18-wheeler was airlifted from the scene, and his identity was not being released.
After Wayne County Coroner David Pugh pronounced West dead, his body was released to Turner Funeral Home. Funeral arrangements are pending.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
