Jags fall to SCA in jamboree

By Paul Keane

Wayne Academy's varsity football team learned where it needed to work to improve before an Aug. 23 season opener after falling, 32-0, to South Choctaw Academy in a preseason jamboree at home Thursday night.
The Jaguars struggled at times and also flashed some positive signs during the four quarters of action. The Rebels from Alabama, though, proved to be a little bit stronger when it came down to it.

"We have to go back and look at things," said Head Coach Tommy Parker. "We had a few positive things and a lot of negative things. We just have to go back now and work to get better, making adjustments and improvements and getting ready for our first real game of the season next week."

Things started out on a positive note for the Jaguars as Coty Williams recovered a fumble at the W.A. 35-yard line on the first series of the night. The offense sputtered, though, and a short punt gave the Rebels possession at the W.A. 47-yard line. Four plays later, SCA was in the end zone off a 9-yard run, making it 6-0 with 6:21 left in the first period of play.

After another short drive by the offense, the Rebels took over at their own 42-yard line. Six plays later, a 4-yard run and a two-point conversion made it 14-0 with 47 seconds left in the opening stanza.

The Jaguars rebounded in the second quarter, opening the period with a solid 10-play drive that stalled at the 38-yard line after W.A. reached the SCA 41. A sack, a delay of game penalty and a negative run pushed the home team back into its own territory, though, forcing a punt.

The Rebels would use another short punt to set up a seven-play drive that ended with a 5-yard run. That made it 20-0 at halftime.

After the Rebels returned an interception 48 yards for another score, making it 26-0, the Jaguars put together another solid drive, marching to the SCA 41-yard line in six plays before being forced to punt. The Rebels took that punt and put together an 11-play, 73-yard drive that culminated with a 1-yard run to make it 32-0 with 10:37 left in the game.

From there, the two teams traded punts until time expired.

For the night, the Jaguars rushed for 44 yards and passed for another 20 while the Rebels rushed for 236 yards and passed another 34.
